Olusegun Obasanjo, the country’s former president, has enlisted the help of state police to battle the country’s growing insecurity.
According to Obasanjo, establishing state police would be a superior option to community policing.

To address the nationwide wave of insecurity, the former President believes that state police should take precedence over community policing.

Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, quoted the former president as saying this during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the National Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen in Nigeria to him in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Obasanjo stressed the importance of bolstering the traditional system as well as local government administration.

“Everyone is concerned about our condition in Nigeria, particularly the subject of terrorism,” he stated. The issue of community police has been resolved in this case. It is now the responsibility of the state police. We can now discuss community police as a result of the state police.

“I prepared under the popular Murtala/Obasanjo administration because I believe that that tier of government ought to be able to function as a true local government.” They have their own legislature, executive branch, and judiciary.

“They were working and visible, developing and managing roads, looking into education, health, local administration, and agriculture, but they’re all gone now.”
