Segun Sowunmi Wins Ogun PDP Governorship Ticket in 2023

Segun Sowunmi, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, was elected on Wednesday.
Sowunmi stood against two other candidates, Jimi Lawal and Ladi Adebutu, in the election.

Sowunmi received 554 votes to defeat Lawal, who received 30 votes, and Adebutu, who received 15 votes.

The election was held in the presence of security at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The election was peaceful, free, and fair, according to authorities from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and members of the Inter Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC).


After the votes were tabulated, the head of the electoral committee, Abayomi Daniel, declared Sowunmi the election winner.

A total of 778 delegates were accredited, 702 votes were cast, and three votes were nullified, according to Daniel.

“By the power bestowed on me by the national leadership of our great party as chairman electoral committee of the PDP governorship primary election in Ogun State, I have declared Hon. Segun Sowunmi as the winner of the election, having polled the highest number of votes, and he is hereby returned and elected,” Daniel said.

Sowunmi thanked members of the party for their support and promised not to let them down in his acceptance speech.

Sowunmi urged other hopefuls to join him in ensuring the party’s triumph in the 2023 general elections.

“I respectfully accept the nomination as a Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Ogun State,” Sowunmi remarked.

“I appreciate all of the delegates’ efforts, as well as the work of all appropriate authorities and security.”

“I’m particularly struck with the primaries’ orderliness.

“To my brothers and fellow seekers, I send an olive branch of peace and camaraderie.”

“It is the start of a new dawn in the PDP and a clear step towards a watershed moment in our dear Ogun State,” he said.
