Orji Kalu Warns APC Ahead Of 2023 Elections: If Atiku Picks A Southern Candidate He Will Be Defeated

Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senate’s Chief Whip, has reacted to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a Northeasterner, winning the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Presidential ticket for the 2023 election.

With the election of Atiku, a Northerner, the former governor of Abia State declared that the ruling party could no longer elect a Southerner as its flagbearer, claiming that such a move would portend disaster.

On Saturday, Atiku Abubakar was announced as the PDP’s presidential contender for the 2023 general election.

Atiku won the highly desired presidential ticket during the main opposition party’s presidential primaries in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Atiku, the party’s presidential candidate in 2019 who was beaten by President Muhammadu Buhari, received 371 votes to overcome his nearest rival, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who received 237 votes.

Kalu, who has now endorsed Senate President Ahmed Lawan for the president in 2023, has warned Buhari that unless he chooses a candidate from the North-East, the APC will become an opposition party after 2023.

“Congratulations to the PDP for nominating a North Easterner as their presidential candidate. “What I observed yesterday must have been seen by Nigerians,” Kalu stated in a statement.

“It is no longer possible for our party, the APC, to talk about Southern candidates unless the APC wants to withdraw from politics.”

“I implore the party’s National Chairman and the whole NWC to stamp their feet and zone the APC presidential ticket to the North-East,” he said.

“President Muhammad Buhari has the right to choose his successor, and I urge him to do so by appointing Senator Ahmad Lawan.” Presidents and governors support and choose their successors in every democratic environment.

“I urge President Buhari to appoint a successor from the North East, as this will provide the South East with the needed equity.” The pattern of areas generating Nigerian presidents will come to an end with the North-East.

“By now, all APC contenders should have abandoned their ambitions and backed a North Easterner.” The destination is Senator Ahmad Lawan.

“We look forward to a president of Nigeria from the North East,” he stated, congratulating the region.
