A Chinese national was sentenced to two years in prison for tampering with Nigerian currency notes

The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Command has successfully prosecuted and sentenced one Li Lei Lei, a Chinese national, to 24 months in prison for tampering with Nigerian cash.

On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, he was found guilty by Justice I. Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The defendant was charged with four counts of tampering with a Nigerian note, which is illegal and punished under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Establishment Act.

“That you, Li Lei Lei, tampered with One Thousand Naira (N1,000) Note, with serial number 947882 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria on or about the 17th day of May, 2022, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Establishment) Act, Cap C4, Vol.1, Laws of the Federation of

“That you, Li Lei Lei, tampered with One Thousand Naira (N1,000) note, with serial number 114804 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria on or about the 17th day of May, 2022 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, Cap C4, Vol.1, Laws of the Federation

He admitted to the crime and pled “guilty.”

The prosecution attorney, Ayanfe Ogunshina, requested to reconsider the facts of the case in light of his guilty plea.

The offender was apprehended on May 17, 2022, while attempting to board an aircraft to Kenya, according to Ogunshina.

He also informed the court that when the Immigration agents were inspecting Le Lie Lie’s bags, he ripped the Naira notes to shreds to the tune of 3,000, 200 Naira (N3, 200)

He also told the court that the defendant was arrested by DSS officers and turned over to the EFCC for investigation and prosecution.

The prosecution presented the defendant with the convict’s voluntary statements, which were written in Mandarin and translated into English by a known interpreter.

The prosecution also presented the EFCC with a handover note from the DSS as well as shredded Naira notes.

When presenting his case, Ogunshina begged the court to find him guilty and sentence him appropriately.

On each count, Justice Oweibo found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison, with the option of a fine of two hundred thousand Naira (N200, 000.00)
