Despite the President’s denial Jonathan could be screened today by the APC

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to testify before the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential screening committee today, according to reports.

This is despite the presidency’s statement on Sunday that President Muhammadu Buhari was involved in a conspiracy to draft Jonathan into the 2023 presidential election on the ruling party’s platform.

The presidential screening committee began the process of vetting presidential candidates who want to run for the party’s ticket in the 2023 general election yesterday.

The in-camera screening procedure, which took place at the Transcorp Hhotel in Abuja, is set to end today.

Jonathan, who was in Milan, Italy, for a high-level advisory board meeting of the European Corporate Council on Africa and the Middle East (ECAM Council), was expected to arrive in Italy today and travel to the location of the screening exercise, according to LEADERSHIP.

According to a source close to the former Nigerian president, Jonathan is still running for the APC presidential nomination and will be vetted today.

The source, who did not want his identity published, said that, contrary to allegations that Jonathan had dropped out of the campaign, Jonathan “was completely in the race and President Buhari has not given up on him.”

“He is returning today, and barring any last-minute changes of plans, I can guarantee you that he will be heading to the screening venue to be screened among other APC presidential hopefuls,” the source added.

“A key decision concerning the former president would be decided at any point from now, precisely as from tomorrow (Tuesday),” the insider added.

LEADERSHIP also learned from a source close to the APC’s presidential screening committee that another presidential aspirant’s name would be announced today, raising the total number of presidential aspirants for the ruling party to 25.

“At the moment, there are 24 names on the list of APC presidential hopefuls to be vetted, but the screening committee expects another presidential aspirant name from the party leadership today.” This will raise the total number of aspirants to 25,” said the person, who requested anonymity since he is not authorized to talk publicly.

The presidency denied on Sunday that President Buhari was involved in a conspiracy to conscript Jonathan into the presidential campaign before of the APC primary.

The president had taken steps to dissociate himself from the conspiracy, according to the report.

According to media reports, instructions have been provided that no photos of any meetings between the former president and Buhari be made public at this time, as the president does not want such images to be used to lend credence to the scheme to get Jonathan into the race.

Despite the fact that Jonathan had previously rejected the presidential nomination and expression of interest forms bought for him by Fulani and Almajiri organizations, his name has remained associated with the APC ticket, even as his membership in the party has been a topic of public debate.

However, certain APC members, notably a Northern governor, have been accused of pushing Jonathan into the ruling party’s presidential primary.
