Police Three unexploded bombs were discovered at the scene of the Owo Church attack

Following the terrorist attack that killed no less than 50 people at the St. Francis Catholic church in Owo, police headquarters revealed that Explosive Ordnance Experts (EOE) discovered three unexploded bombs on the church grounds.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s public relations officer, denounced the heinous murder of worshippers at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owaluwa in Owo, Ondo state, in a statement released on Monday.

He stated the attack happened around 11.30 a.m. on Sunday.

Police investigators also recovered pellets of spent AK-47 ammunition, while the Explosive Ordnance Devices – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosives (EOD-CBRNE) unit confirmed the use of explosives by discovering fragments of the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) used.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has condemned the brutal murder of innocent Nigerians at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owaluwa in Owo, Ondo state, in its entirety.”

“At about 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, June 5th, 2022, unidentified gunmen launched an attack.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the gunmen entered the church with weapons and materials suspected to be explosives.

“Police investigators who were among the first responders on the scene recovered pellets of spent AK-47 ammunition, while the Explosive Ordnance Devices – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosives (EOD-CBRNE) unit confirmed the use of explosives by discovering fragments of the IEDs used.”

“Three unexploded IEDs were discovered at the scene of the incident after a thorough sweeping.”

“Further investigations revealed that some of the gunmen pretended to be congregants, while other armed men positioned themselves around the church premises from various angles fired into the church.”

“The assailants fled the scene in a Nissan Sunny car with the registration number AKR 895 AG, which had been stolen from the owner, and escaped via the Owo/Ute road.”

“The vehicle has been recovered, and the owner is currently cooperating with the police investigation.”

“The IGP has ordered a full investigation into the incident in order to bring the perpetrators of the church’s gruesome killings to justice.”

“The IGP has also ordered the deployment of Police EOD-CBRNE specialized operatives, police experts, and other tactical units from Force headquarters for a complete investigation and immediate interception of the villains.”

“As a result, the Inspector-General of Police expresses his condolences to the Ondo state administration, as well as the victims’ families, relatives, and friends.”

“He also promises that the cruel killers of innocent victims, notably children, will face the full force of the law, while the Force will put in place tactics to prevent similar events in the future.”
