For impregnating a 14-year-old pupil a teacher was sentenced to life in prison

For impregnating a 14-year-old girl, Joseph Ibanga, a lesson teacher, will spend the rest of his life in prison.

The punishment was handed out by Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Monday.

The crime is believed to be punishable under Section 137 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015, which carries a life sentence for offenders.

At the trial, the prosecution called three witnesses, but the defendant had no witnesses and had to defend himself.

The defendant committed the offence between January and March 2019 at No.12, Iresi Street, Orile-Agege, Lagos, according to the prosecution team of Olusola Soneye, Olufunke Adegoke, and Abimbola Abolade.

They all said the defendant was a lesson teacher who tutored the survivor at home since she had been absent from school “for a long period due to slow learning.”

According to the prosecution, the defendant r#ped the minor everytime he went to educate her at her aunt’s house.

She later fell pregnant and gave birth to a child.

In his decision, Justice Soladoye stated that the prosecution had proven the charge of defilement against the defendant.

“The survivor was a minor, and her permission is irrelevant,” she added. The defendant had s#x with the victim at her home and in the defendant’s own married home, according to the evidence presented in court. She later fell pregnant and gave birth to a child.

“The defendant’s evidence was backed up by the medical report. The defendant is culpable for the offense, and the court has evidence to prove it.

“The defendant was identified by the survivor as her lesson teacher and as the person who had s#xual intercourse with her without her consent.”

“The defendant is ungrateful and cruel; he raped the student and taught her garbage with impunity.” Ibanga has made the teaching profession look bad, and this punishment will teach him a lesson and act as a warning to others.

“Based on the avalanche of evidence against him, the defendant is hereby found guilty as accused, and he is sentenced to life imprisonment.”

The judge ordered that the convict’s name be entered into the Lagos State register of sexual offenders.
