A three-story building collapsed at Kanti Kwari textile market in Kano State on Tuesday, killing Abdulkadir Nasiru, a 20-year-old construction worker, and injuring Nasiru Shafiu, his co-worker.
Before it collapsed about 12:35 p.m., the third story of the structure was under construction, while the second and first floors were completed.
The majority of the buildings on the market, according to a source on the scene, are not built to professional standards. People, he claims, haphazardly add more stories to their buildings without seeking professional guidance.
While confirming the occurrence, Saminu Yusif, a spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, blamed it on the use of substandard building materials.
“On Tuesday at noon, we received a distress call concerning the incident. In Unity Road, Kantin Kwari market, a three-story structure under construction fell.”
According to the spokesman, two people were trapped inside the building; one, Abdulkadir Nasir, a 20-year-old, was rescued, while the other, Naziru Shafiu, a 30-year-old, was found dead.
He went on to say that the body was sent to Nasarawa Specialist Hospital.
