Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, has asked that youth corps members undergo drug testing as they report for their mandatory one-year national service at various orientation camps across the country as part of the anti-narcotics agency’s drug demand reduction efforts.

Marwa made the statement on March 8, 2022, during a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja with the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Fadah and his management team.

With facts and data from the 2018 national drug survey, the NDLEA chairman sketched a picture of Nigeria’s drug epidemic, urging for concerted efforts to change the narrative.

“A drug test for our youth corps participants is required when they report to the orientation camps. They will abstain from taking drugs once they realize there will be a drug test at the camps. The goal is to guarantee that those who test positive early on receive assistance. This is part of our WADA (War Against Drug Abuse) effort, according to Marwa.

“Nigeria is dealing with a drug problem. We are determined to alter this, but we can’t do it alone; we need organizations like NYSC to help us cut and regulate drug demand. There aren’t enough rehabilitation and counseling centers in Nigeria.”

“We need counselling centers in primary health care centers at the ground level, which we don’t have the people to cover, and this is where the NYSC young men and women come in.” We can train a large number of individuals to work as community counsellors because the majority of drug users simply require counseling,” he continued.

Brig. Gen. Fadah had earlier expressed his gratitude to the NDLEA for previous support to the plan and asked for more collaboration as NYSC prepares to open the doors of orientation camps across the country.
