According to reports, the Nigerian military opened fire on a throng of unarmed protestors while performing the national anthem and waving the Nigerian flag, killing a number of youths.

End SARS is a decentralized social movement in Nigeria that consists of a series of anti-police brutality protests. The term (End SARS) calls for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), an infamous Nigerian police force with a long history of abuses.

Nigerians in the diaspora and sympathizers held solidarity protests and demonstrations in many major cities around the world. Since then, the movement has expanded to include demands for more accountable and transparent government.

Just days after the protests began, the Nigerian Police Force stated on October 11, 2020, that the unit will be abolished with immediate effect. The decision was widely viewed as a triumph for the demonstrators.

The Nigerian presidential election of 2023 will take place on February 25, 2023, with the President and Vice President being elected.
