Grammy-winning South African singer, Tyla has revealed that Nigerian R&B star Tems is one of her biggest musical influences.
In a recent interview with Billboard, the *Water* hitmaker praised Tems’ achievements, stating that they have greatly inspired her career.
She said, “Tems is a big one. What she’s been able to do has been very inspiring.”
Tyla also cited Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and Aaliyah as other artists who have shaped her musical journey.
In another part of the interview, Tyla revealed that her sophomore album is set to drop this year.
She hinted that it will take a completely different direction from her self-titled debut.
Do2dtun slams Tyla over VMA acceptance speech
In other news, on-air personality Do2dtun, slammed Tyla for her victory speech at the 2024 VMA Awards.
Tyla, who was nominated alongside Tems, Ayra Starr, Davido, and Burna Boy, received the Best Afrobeats Award.
During the event, criticized the classification of African artists as Afrobeats, despite the genre’s tremendous influence and success. She also claimed to be an Amapiano singer, not Afrobeats.
Reacting to her comment in a series of posts on his X handle, Do2dtun slammed her for receiving an award which didn’t represent her art, considering her Amapiano claim.
He wrote, “Aunty @tyla aka am not Afrobeats, I am Amapiano. We have heard you but your song “Water” is not amapiano either. If you thought you were categorized in a wrong category, you should have given the award back or denounced the nomination.
“You clearly took an award that didn’t represent you or your sound from that statement you made.”
