Ghesquière brought characters to life. Some appeared to be heading home for the holidays, blending city and country influences; others were off on fishing trips, wrapped in blanket coats with pannier bags slung at their hips, or embarking on a day hike in Louis Vuitton’s take on gorp-core. A select few seemed destined for the Orient Express—”the Concorde of trains,” as he put it—dressed accordingly in hand-painted velvet dévoré. Meanwhile, commuters sported sturdy trench coats or sporty jackets, carrying hard-shell bags.
Naturally, a TGV employee made an appearance, donning a jumpsuit and a floppy train attendant tie—an homage to Ghesquière’s childhood memory of the train’s inauguration. The most ingenious touch, however, was the collaboration with Kraftwerk, the German electronic group known for their 1977 hit Trans-Europe Express. “We worked with them on a very limited collection of clothing and handbags—it was fantastic,” Ghesquière shared. The song played as the audience found their seats.
