A suspected terrorist group has attacked the Niger-Benin pipeline at Mountseka in Konni Department, setting parts of the infrastructure ablaze.
The incident occurred on Friday shortly after the breaking of the fast, sending massive flames into the sky.
This was revealed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, in a post on his X handle.
Makama said the attack raises fresh concerns over the security of the multi-billion-dollar project, which has long been considered a strategic asset for Niger’s economy.
The security expert noted that the assault comes amid escalating violence in the region, including the massacre of civilians in Fambita, allegedly carried out by elements of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, EIGS.
“The inability to prevent such attacks has drawn criticism of the ruling junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, and the military’s handling of security challenges,” Makama said.
